The Fastest Cars You Can Take on the Road
For fun, let's take a look at the fastest cars that can sport a license plate.
Hennessey Venom GT (270 mph)
There is some debate about this one, because it registered 270 mph in only one direction. Legitimate records are averages of the speed registered in two runs. The Venom GT did hit the mark, though, with a 1,244-hp 7-liter twin-turbocharged V8.
Bugatti Veyron Super Sport (268 mph)
Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest car in the world, the Super Sport boasts 1,200-hp from a quad-turbocharged W16 engine. It hit 268 mph at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessein test track.
SSC Ultimate Aero (256 mph)
An unknown briefly dethroned the Bugati Veyron when Shelby SuperCars' (unrelated to the Shelby Cobra) Ultimate Aero hit 256 mph in 2007. Bugatti came back with the Super Sport to reclaim the crown. The Aero checks in with a 6.3-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 churning 1,287-hp.
Koenigsegg CCR (242 mph)
In 2005, the Swedish-built Koenigsegg CCR hit 242 mph with a 4.7-liter V8. It has since been replaced by the Agera One:1, which Koenigsegg claims can top 270, though it has yet to be tried.
McLaren F1 (241 mph)
The engine bay is lined with gold and the drivers seat is in the center of the car, making the F1 probably the coolest car ever. This first generation road car produced by the experienced Formula 1 racing team ;holds ;a 6.1-liter BMW M V-12 engine. It was once the fastest car in the world and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.
Aston Martin One-77 (220 mph)
;
;
Only 77 of these bad boys were ever made, and ;they represent the fastest that Aston Martin has to offer. With a 7.3-liter V12 that produces 750 hp, the One-77 is a unique combination of speed and luxury that only Aston Martin could provide.

Fastest Cars for Under $40,000
We would all love to drive off in a McLaren F1, but at a price tag of $5 million, we probably need to save a bit first. Luckily, 2015 left us with some pretty fast options for under $40,000. Here are the top five.
Dodge Challenger With Scat Pack Shaker
"Stronger, faster, and more imposing" is Dodge's approach to muscle cars this year, and they succeeded with the new Challenger. Its 6.4-liter V8 with 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker option puts out 485-hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. Dodge claims ;it will go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, which would outperform the Mustang and Camaro. With the Scat Pack, the Challenger just ;comes into our ;budget at $39,940.
Ford Mustang GT
The most acceleration per dollar ($32,025) comes in the Ford Mustang GT. With the classic 5.0-liter V8 pushing out 435-hp and 400 lbs-ft of torque, the newly redesigned Mustang goes from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds.
Chevy Camaro SS
Next year we await the newly ;redesigned Camaro, but its outgoing model meets up to its reputation among the ;top ;explosive muscle cars on the market. Its 6.2-liter V8 is capable of 426-hp and 420 lb-ft of torque tested 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds, just a hair out of second place. Drive one today for $33,355.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR
For a 4-door sedan to make the top 5 fastest list is quite impressive, and the new Evo is just that. With a 4-cylinder turbo engine churning 291-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the Evo goes 0 to 40 in just 4.9 seconds. Call it the muscle sedan at a price of $34,995.
Volkswagen Golf R
Volkswagen makes the list at #5 with the Golf R. A turbocharged, 16-valve 4-cyclinder capable of 290-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque powers this puppy from 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds. She is priced nicely at $36,595.
